Preliminary Match Cut

Preliminary match cut forms the basis for continuity editing, it also allows us to understand how important it is to have different camera angles, camera shots, alongside camera movements that are combined together to produce a good clip. Match cut enables your shots to look really interesting and creative, most importantly it enhances a meaning with the continuity editing.

After we were done with out tutorial on camera introduction, we started on our Preliminary Match Cut excercise. We started off by planning our storyboard which had to relate to a title sequence that we were given by our teacher. The title sequence we had to illustrate was, 'A character opens a door, walks into a room, sits down opposite another character, then they share a few lines of dialogue'. This exercise allowed us to experiment with the camera and it also helped us identify the use of Preliminary Match Cut. To complete our task we had to have examples of, match cuts, shot reverse shot, and lastly we had to show our understanding of the 180 degree rule. Overall i really enjoyed the whole exercise and also found Preliminary Match Cut very useful.

Our storyline illustrated a suspect waiting to be questioned by a police officer.

Preliminary Match Cut

Preliminary match cut exercise has allowed us to film variety of different shots in different angles to produce match cuts.
These shots were then put in to Final Cut Pro to be edited to set the match cuts for the shots to be continuous.

Camera Shots

  • Extreme Long Shot
  • Long Shot
  • Full Shot
  • Mid Shot
  • Extreme close-up

Camera Angles

  • Bird Eye Angle
  • High Angle
  • Eye-level Angle
  • Low Angle

Camera Movements

  • Crane Shot
  • Panning
  • Tracking Shot

Camera shots are used to highlight different aspects of a film's setting, characters and themes. Camera angles are used to position the viewer so that they can understand the relationships between the characters. Therefore camera shots and angles are very important in shaping meaning in a film.

Preliminary match cut exercise has allowed us to improve our skills on how to produce match cuts during filming process and editing.

Bag Swap

This is another practice that we have produced along with the preliminary match cut exercise. This practice has allowed us to create further developments during our filming process and improved our editing skills.

Preliminary Match Cut Film

Preliminary Match Cut Film
In this lesson, the teacher told us that we needed to make a short clip and then edit it after we had took all the shots. We had to had a idea of how to use the equipment and what kind of shots we had to use before we actually started filming the real one. We had to have match cuts in the short clip so it looked like a proper clip with cameras all around the room.
I like the match cuts we had done while I had opened the rooms door and walked in, we had the camera outside the room behind me opening the door, then we took the camera into the room and do the sequence again but this time inside the room while me walking in. After we had edited it, since we had edited it good it looked like a continuous cut, in my opinion it was a good match cut.
There were some stuff that i thought we could of done better like the over shoulder shots, since the room was small we couldn't actually put the camera behind anyone, if there was more room we could of done that better and also could of done shot reverse shot to make it look better.
I think for a practise run, we made a good attempt to make a short clip with match cuts and to make them look smooth where you can not tell a match cut has taken place and i think we achieved that as all match cuts look professional. I think this was a good practice because now in the real one we would know how to improve it and not make the same mistakes.
