What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

This whole experience has allowed us to learn many things, and most importantly it has helped us develop our skills in certain technologies.

Technologies we were introduced to, and technologies that has helped us with the process of constructing our media product:

By using Google, we were able to research nearly anything we needed. For example, if we needed to research a particular film we would just simply use google to open IMBD which would show us all the information we would be needing on a film. Youtube allows us to find almost every video we could possibly look for such as, films, music, trailers and many more things.

We were introduced to JVC cameras. We had a brief tutorial on how to use cameras. This tutorial really allowed us to understand all the functions to a high tech camera.

Soundtrack Pro, soundtrack allows us to create music that we could use in our thriller opening title sequence. Music can really create tension, and Soundtrack is a great program to use because it allows us to combine a variety of instruments with each other, which could possibly turn out to be music that really creates anxiety and suspicion.

Livetype Pro, Live Type allows us to create a title sequence which helps express the mood and genre of the film for example, every font, size of font and colour represents an emotion. Live type can be used in Final Cut Pro, which is very handy because, we originally need to create our thriller opening title sequence in Final Cut Pro.

Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Pro is a professional Non-linear editing software application developed by Apple Inc. The software logs and captures video onto a hard drive (internal or external), where it can be edited and processed.

Overall all these technologies combined together has really helped us put together a good piece of a opening title sequence.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?

As a group we have produced an armature thriller film called 'The Killing Spree'. Our thriller would be best suited to be released by a low-budget production company. Our low-budget film would be a motion picture shot on limited budget. We class ourselves as young armature directors, and because we are unknown it would be appropriate for us to start our film with a low-budget production company. Candi Studios would be best suitable to invest in our film, due to the support and experience they provide for young directors.

Our thriller would get an independent release mainly because its an armature film. Every film sets a target audience depending on their budget and genre. For example if you release a film based on romance with a high budget production company, then you are bound to have a mainstream audience.

For examples of the style of marketing campaign we would envisage for our movie and examples of the types of media which would promote our movie. We would be using social networks, such as, youtube, facebook and myspace.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Media products such as films, tend to represent particular social groups. For example if your media product is aimed at a particular target audience you need to make sure the product is suitable and representable for that audience. A social group is, characteristics shared by members of a group, which may include interests, values, representations, ethhnic group or social background and kinship ties.

In our media product, we have represented a male character who is psychologically disturbed. This character is simply disturbed in the mind. The use of drugs and alcohol triggers him to assault, rape and kill people, however his main victims tend to be women. He takes advantage of the vulnerability and weakness of women.

Adulthood is a film based on characters who have different characteristics. Adulthood has a character named Sam. In the film Kidulthood Sam is a bad person, who takes drugs, sexually assualts his girlfriend and kills someone. Like wise the character that we have represented also has the same problems and bad habbits. Both characters are dressed in dark colours and have their hoods up. Being dressed in dark colours and having your hood up can indicate that you are a threat and you use your hood for disguise.

This is the thriller title sequence made by Sukru Taskiran, Baran Arslan, Derya Yilmaz, Sifa Karadeniz. We chose Candi studios as our production company.

The Shining is a 1980 psychological horror film directed by Stanley Kubrick, co-written with novelist Diane Johnson, and starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, and Danny Lloyd. The film is based on the novel (The Shinning)

There are similarities and differences in both opening title sequence. Both sequences are a narrative opening with the titles running throughout. The differences are, in Killing Spree we view the characters along with the location where as in The Shinning the characters are excluded and we only follow a car throughout its journey.

Preliminary Match Cut

Preliminary match cut forms the basis for continuity editing, it also allows us to understand how important it is to have different camera angles, camera shots, alongside camera movements that are combined together to produce a good clip. Match cut enables your shots to look really interesting and creative, most importantly it enhances a meaning with the continuity editing.

After we were done with out tutorial on camera introduction, we started on our Preliminary Match Cut excercise. We started off by planning our storyboard which had to relate to a title sequence that we were given by our teacher. The title sequence we had to illustrate was, 'A character opens a door, walks into a room, sits down opposite another character, then they share a few lines of dialogue'. This exercise allowed us to experiment with the camera and it also helped us identify the use of Preliminary Match Cut. To complete our task we had to have examples of, match cuts, shot reverse shot, and lastly we had to show our understanding of the 180 degree rule. Overall i really enjoyed the whole exercise and also found Preliminary Match Cut very useful.

Our storyline illustrated a suspect waiting to be questioned by a police officer.

Kingsman Sean Dawson of 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, who was killed in southern Afghanistan.

Kingsman Sean Dawson, 19, from 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, died in the Musa Qala area of Helmand Province on Sunday evening.

Kingsman Dawson, from Stalybridge, Manchester, was deployed to Afghanistan on January 16 after passing a course to become a sniper. He was killed while taking part in an ambush of suspected militants near Patrol Base Minden in the north of Helmand. The incident was not connected to the ongoing Operation Moshtarak to drive the Taliban out of a stronghold around Marjah and Nad-e-Ali in Helmand.

This sad story could potentially be a good thriller, mainly beacuse there are many thrillers based on terrorism and war. This story could be about a young man who's only ambition is to serve his country, however his journey could be very sad, thrilling and traumatic.

The title sequence i chose to Analyse is Dawn Of The Dead.













Dawn of the dead is a haunting thriller, it has many bloody and scary scenes.

Intro To Cameras & Health and Safety Tutorial

In our intro for camera & health and safety tutorial we learned how to use a camera and this tutorial really allowed us to understand all the functions of the camera.

We learned, how there are two slots where we could put two memory cards in (A&B).
How to turn the camera on and off.
How to set up a Tripod.
How to focus with the camera and zoom in and out.
How to detach and attach the lens.
How to record and play back footage.
How to insert the memory card, and how important it is to always remember to take the memory card out of the camera after we are done with it.
How to attach the camera to the tripod, and also how to lock and unlock the camera on the tripod.

To have a good thriller opening title sequence, we need to have a good quality opening title with a soundtrack that creates anxiety. The two programs that will allow us to do this is, Live Type and Sound.


Live Type allows us to create a title sequence which helps express the mood and genre of the film for example, every font, size of font and colour represents an emotion. Live type can be used in Final Cut Pro, which is very handy because, we originally need to create our thriller opening title sequence in Final Cut Pro.

Soundtrack allows us to create music that we could use in our thriller opening title sequence. Music can really create tension, and Soundtrack is a great program to use because it allows us to combine a variety of instruments with each other, which could possibly turn out to be music that really creates anxiety and suspicion.

The structure of thriller openings

There are three types of basic Thriller openings:

A narrative opening with the titles running throughout.
A discrete title sequence.
Titles on a plain background, followed by the narrative opening.

I have studied four different Thriller openings, each thriller opening connects with one of the three types of thriller openings that i have stated above.

In our lesson we had to analyse different opening title sequences, whilst analysing we had to consider key points such as the, mise en scene, camera work, editing, narrative, lighting and sound.

The film I chose to analyse is déjà vu, in my opinion the most attractive and interesting title sequence was Déjà vu. Firstly we are introduced to the setting, we see medium shots of the environment alongside shots mid shots of people cheering and laughing, basically we are introduced to a happy setting, where it seems like an big even or in other words something important is about to take place. However the calm sad music does arouse some questions, for example it makes you think, despite the fact that the people are so happy there’s this sad calm music.

We hear a variety of diegetic sounds such as, the busy crowd, horns, laughter, vehicle engines. The lighting is natural lighting, indicates that it’s a happy day with the bright lighting. Once the film’s title is introduced the music starts to pick up and it becomes more impulsive, which helps create suspicion. Once we see the captain of the boat we also see a reflection on the window of a guy waiting on the bride, this shot also points out potential danger. The shot that I like and find effective is the one where the little girl drops her dolly into the sea, the dolly drops in slow motion it almost signifies little girl herself and how she also could be in danger.

The title sequence appears in white writing, I really like the technique they have used to introduce the words. It’s almost as if the words are being photographed and captured in a frame. Overall I personally think the opening title sequence to déjà vu is interesting and eye catching. After a title sequence like déjà vu I’m sure I will be into the film, wanting to watch more.

Taking lives



This particular font really appeals to me mainly because it looks like pieces of matches put together which indicates danger. A thriller is a genre that is suppose to create suspense and tension, and by looking at this films poster, already the mans blurred face automatically creates suspense. On the other hand, the font of the title also seems mysterious and creepy. The font is bright and because I have seen this film the font of the title really represents the personality and characteristics of the main character (Ethan Hawk) who turns out to be a psycho.
